Hi, everyone....







Well, it's been some time since I entered a note about what God is preparing for the English Language Ministry (ELM).


On September 1st I will leave for Accra Ghana for a 2-week training institute. The first week will be in Abokobi, just northeast of Accra at the Presbyterian Women's Center retreat center. There may be as many as 35 to 40 attendees. Then the second week I will be in Takradi, the southwest port city at a Ghana mission ministry. Here there will be upwards of 100 teachers being trained using my new curriculum, USING EVERYDAY ENGLISH.


Assisting me will be Lori Martin, from LEI-Canada (Toronto area), Michael Tetteh, our English representative in Ghana who is hosting this institute, and Charles Udoh, from the Ivory Coast. Charles will be bringing 5 trainees with him so this ministry can advance more rapidly in that country.

All three books are completed; now, all that is needed is the audio for books 2 & 3 and a training video for the internet. All this should be completed by March of next year...Lord willing and by His grace!!

Returning from Ghana, I will rendezvous with Leona in London and meet with some missionaries who now live in northern England and are wanting to reach out to the immigrant communities that live in their neighborhood. We'll be joined with Georg and Martha Ort, our LEI workers in Tulsa who know these missionaries from their work in Nepal years ago.

USING EVERYDAY ENGLISH in Brazil!



Alex Lowchinoscy is beginning an English language outreach in Brazil and asked permission to use the new curriculum, Using Everyday English, book 1-"Today!" I had no idea how large his class was, but it looks as if he is well on his way in promoting English through his church outreach ministry.



Book 3, "Tomorrow!" is completed and in field test mode, or "proof reading copy" mode for any of you who are wanting to use it and help us field-test it.

The appendix and addendem list all the verb forms and a list of all the games we enjoy playing. Included are the music lyrics and scores so if people from other countries are not familiar with our music, such as, "He has the whole world in His hands" or "the Hokey Pokey", they will have the written scores to be able to play it. Also, I intend to have all the music added onto the internet for downloading so anyone can listen to it.



I am grateful to our Lord for accomplishing all this enthusiasm. I want you to celebrate God's goodness, too. There's still more to do -- training video and special speech reproduction video for sound reproduction for those having difficulty with so many English sounds.

Fresno Training for Punjabi speakers

Last weekend in January, I led a 11 hour tutor-training workshop in Fresno, California at NorthPointe Church. There were 6 trainees and 4 Punjabi Sikhs who attended. Again we used the first book of Using Everyday English, "TODAY!" Don Fisher, Kim Gratson were great hosts and even though the clouds covered the San Joaquin Valley, there was plenty of "sun" inside our training room! God is slowly...making His message known in this resistent language group. They, like so many other ethnic groups, have difficulty assimilating into American culture. It's hard to let go of the old country. So, our best hope is the second or third generation as they have no experience of being in India. God is showing His love and grace through faithful loving Christians who have embraced these folks.

The picture to the right are the ladies pronouncing explosive letter sounds like 't' and 'p'. Always a good laugh and lots of fun.

I have said in the past the enormous importance of Clap the Stress

drills that help English learners (students) sense the music of our

language...probably even more important than grammar points or word placement.

OUR TRAINING IS OVER

Twelve students showed up. And here is Ruth Russel, 80+ years young, teaching the pronunciation section. She spends time in Budapest teaching the Bible and has a great love for evangelism.

Oh yeah...nothing as much fun as singing, dancing and playing the Hokey Pokey!

Even though this picture is blurred, you can see the students (learners) using Kleenex tissues to practice making the sounds of 'b', 'p', 'h' and 't'.

They laughed a lot and that's the greatest pleasure we have in tutoring.

Hope you enjoyed seeing the fun a tutor-training workshop is and will want to begin your own English language outreach ministry.

FIRST EVER ENGLISH TRAINING WORKSHOP IN TORONTO!

There is a special feeling coming to Toronto for an English Language Training workshop. In the picture (left) standing next to me is Paul Terry Robinson and in front in the blue blouse is Mabel Wee. Paul Terry and Mabel attended the 2003 training institute in Tulsa and returned to Toronto with ESL as their vision and passion. I came to Toronto in 2003 and led a workshop using PASSPORT to the World of English as our text. Over the seven years, they have created English classes among the muslim community and established a resource cooperative for any church or Christian in Toronto teaching English - all online over the internet.
Between Paul Terry and Mabel is Carey Jo Johnston who leads our LEI-Canada office as well as co-pastoring Knox Presbyterian Church in a small town an hour away from Toronto. The two on the end (right) is Ken and Lori Martin. Lori is preparing herself to be the lead English trainer for Canada. She is scheduled to join Carey Jo on a primer construction training and project in Sierra Leone late October and November. She will be quite versatile and an indispensible member of the new Canadian team. Ken supports her work with a full-time employment in Toronto.

Juanita is working with Peng and Steven on lesson 2 of Using Everyday English doing the Theme Picture. Peng was quite advanced in English and was able to create some incredible storylines which made all of us roll with laughter. Steven felt a tad overwhelmed with Peng's stories, and being an electrical engineer was enjoying the stories and adding more. Peng's comment to us when before leaving was "I enjoy tonight. It is more fun! In my ESL class there is one teacher and 30 students. I don't speak any English. Here is speak a lot." A good commentary on the value of the textbook and the need for English ministry within the local church.

Here is Ruth leading the Theme Picture. The video will show you how creative Peng is. Ruth is 80 years 'young' and travels annually to Budapest, Hungry where she is part of Scripture Union and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. While in Hungry, she teaches Bible classes with small groups of university students and plans on using the ESL methods and skills on her next trip this Fall. I hope when you watch this video that you will be convinced that age is not a factor when tutoring. Her humble spirit, passion for the lost, compassion to bring people close to Jesus through teaching and language learning is a great inspiration to all of us.

September in Toronto!

Heading to Toronto in September for the first major English Language Ministry training workshop using book 1, "today!" of my new series, Using Everyday English. Carey Jo Johnson, our LEI rep in Canada will be organizing and preparing everything. All Leona and I have to do is to get there! We plan to drive our motorhome across the upper states and park it in the church's parking lot during the training.

Hopefully we'll be visiting churches on the way. Included is a possible visit with our friends, the Woods, who live in Ithica, NY., the Cranks in Cinncinati, and relatives in Tulsa. We'll be looking forward to seeing our "great grandson" Dylan who lives in Broken Arrow, OK.

Thanks for your prayers regarding this long trip...and a first for us in a motorhome.

Requests for 2011 are already coming in: our LEI directors in Malawi, Maxwell Mpinganga and Michael Tetteh in Ghana both want some training using UEE. This is planned around this time next year.

There are also two requests in Mexico, so we will see what God is doing and be as prepared as possible to assist the nationals and missionaries located there.

Coming to the finish line!

Yes! Thank you Lord, Jesus. This is July 1, 2010 and my goal was to complete the last 6 lessons of Using Everyday English (UEE) before the end of June. All I have left to complete is "How to teach a lesson" and the appendices which include charts of the verb tenses, adjective and adverb endings, prefixes and suffixes, etc., and finally, lyrics from the various songs included in the lessons and suggested games which are played during a training workshop.

Now, the big development will be to revise the training DVD to include the new curriculum, and (this is where I really need your prayers!) the production of a 3-D (3 dimensional) phonetic drama that will depict how a person can make the correct sounds of the English letters.

I have found that the two most challenging sounds for new English speakers are: th (both voiced and unvoiced) and the r (gutteral rather than dental). The letters n and l also give various learners trouble.

My goal, which you can continue to pray for me, is to complete this project before the end of this year, 2010.

Planeta Rica, Colombia, training workshop

The first week in December, Kent Davy and I traveled to Planeta Rica, Cordova state, Colombia, South America for a one-week English teacher training workshop. Liceth Oyolo Gamboa has been teaching a basic English class in a Christian school, and wanted to train other teachers as an outreach of her church, La Iglesia del Divino Salvador (Church of the Divine Savior).



There were 7 teachers and about a dozen students, all but one,
under the age of 30! What fun! They were enthusiastic, energetic and full of it....

Though it was hot (their summer) we were able to communicate both methodology and content from my new English book, Using Everyday English.

We played games--Zip-Zap, Elephant, It's a what? and sang songs: The Hokey Pokey, He has the whole world in His hands.

Here in this picture, students are demonstrating the need to blow air for the letters H, P, T, etc. Using a tissue, they hold it close to their mouth and pronounce the word. If the tissue puffs out, then they've placed their mouth in the correct position.

These students are part of the youth ministry of the church and other local association churches in Planeta Rica. The "kids" are a tight group that spends lots of hours together because they play instruments in the worship team, or sing on the worship team, lead Sunday School classes, etc.


Kent and I were housed in a very comfortable home. Our hostess was Afredina. Kent and I must have added several inches to our waistline.

We would eat a meal, then the gang would come over and take us out to some friends home to celebrate their birthday party (more snacks!) or out to their favorite haunt...an ice cream parlor.

We are so blessed by all their love and graciousness. To know that the family of God is doing so well in this rural city of 37,000 is such a joy to my heart.

You have to experience God's love through your brothers and sisters to truly appreciate the definition of "God's Family."

Leona just reminded me that I should put a quick note on our blog so that those of you who access our blog can also link to Daniele & Andrew Vuksic and their Gospel on the Go Ministries. When we were there in the summer of 2008 we helped them move into their new home and had a wonderful time with them knowing how God was going to grow their new congregation. We feel close to their ministry and want you to share in our joy, too. So, check it out.

Through God's grace 250 books of Using Everyday English have been printed. Michael Tetteh in Ghana was able to print these for distribution (for sale) to the people who attended the English Language Ministry Training Institute in Abokobi, Ghana.

Give glory to God for this first incredible step to the advancement of His Kingdom through English classes with Bible stories.

I'm excited about this...and I hope you are, too.

Today was a wonderful day for worship and hearing God's Word preached well. Afterward, Gregory Bangura, LEI's West Africa director and president of Rabboni Ministries (West Africa) and I had lunch with pastors Brad & Rene Roth from our church. Our discussion was about the future possibility of drilling fresh water wells in Sierra Leone and Liberia in the near future. We would covet your prayers for this needy and urgent evangelistic outreach. Fresh water, let me remind you, is a wonderful opening for a whole community. To invite them for water and renewed health, it also becomes a way of inviting them to learn how to read their mother tongue. In our LEI primers, there are stories from the Bible, so literacy then becomes the avenue to share the Good News of Jesus our Lord and Savior. Then, in addition, many who are educated desperately ask for English and that's where I come in!

We want to train teachers and trainers to train teachers throughout all of West and East Africa. Today was just the beginning of this grand, divine adventure.

The Ghana English Language Ministry teacher training institute began August 31st with 14 trainees. Today is September 10th and we have completed 2 weeks of training. Here's what the content of the training - the first week I trained them on how to use the book...Using Everyday English "Today!" English learners arrived on Wednesday and very good progress was made in spite of the quality of English spoken by the teachers! I think they learned as much, if not more, than the learners. The second week I let the teachers role play a teacher-training workshop. On Wednesday new teacher-trainees arrived along with our learners, and for 2 days now, we have been training the trainees to teach. This is because when these teachers return home, they must train their teachers on how to teach UEE.

We played three games: zip-zap (a get acquainted game); "It's a what?" for learning some basic objects, and tic-tac-toe for identifying the names of objects. Then we sang the "Hokey Pokey" which was a great hit.

One additional game I played was "the maze". Here's a picture of Charles being directed through the maze as a student tells him to "go straight 3 steps," "turn left," "take 2 steps", etc.



Here is the class that graduated today and will leave for their home towns tonight.

1. West Africa desperately needs a video training DVD.
2. UEE needs an audio of the oral portions;
3. Teachers need a phonetic video so they can produce certain sounds they don't have in their own language.

Time to update everyone on what's coming. On August 27th I'll be leaving for Accra, Ghana for a 2-week English language training institute. The goal is to have the 17+ participants learn 1) how to use the new English curriculum, Using Everyday English, and 2) how to teach other teachers to use it when they return home.


This is really the first time this has been attempted (by me, that is!), so I've outlined both weeks the best I could. This is pretty critical training institute in that my goal is to reproduce trainers before I get too old to travel anywhere! And the need for trainers is crucial to keep this unique language ministry expanding.


I've tried to upload a picture of the cover of the new English curriculum, but this blog either doesn't like PDF files. So, you'll have to trust me when I tell you that the first book, Today! is completed and past "field-testing." Book 2: Yesterday! is still in a field-test condition for a few more months until I'm satisfied that it is effective. And the 3rd book, Tomorrow! is only partially finished.


* Do pray for my 2-week training in Ghana; it's critical I believe for the West Africa ministry.


* Pray as I spend time completing the 3rd book of the Using Everyday English series; and as missionaries and nationals use it in their ministries


* Pray for Daniel Awolou from Benin, West Africa as he applies for a visa to come to the US for 3 months. He will live with Leona and me and will spend large amounts of time working on his English skills, particularly his oral skills, so he can work with English-speaking primer teams in West Africa. We're considering mid-March of 2010.


* Pray for my training workshop (one week) in Planeta Rica, Colombia, So. America the first week in December. Pray for Kent Davy to join me for this trip.

After one month, here is a current update from brother Charles Udoh who I spent one week after the Abidjan International Literacy Training Institute. He lives in San Pedro about a 5+ hour minibus ride from Abidjan. His email to me today says, "We have started two classes here in San Pedro and everything is going well with great enthusiasm from the learners...Rev. Bangura's wife (Agnes) is organising a tutor training workshop the last week in July and hopefully my wife will be there." He concludes, "...my son was very excited about seeing his picture on the net. He's going about telling everyone who cares to listen that the whole world know[s] him courtesy of tonton le blanc (uncle whiteman)."

stand with Gregory and me. Daniel is from Benin, a French speaking country, and hopefully, he will spend upwards of 3 months with me here in the States improving his English skills. This is very important since he currently is limited to helping primer construction teams that only speak French. In order to assist English speaking teams in English speaking countries, he needs this accelerated jump-start.
Daniel is a very faithful and humble servant of our Lord and it is a privledge to know him better and have him in my home next year.

In May, I went to Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in West Africa to train some nationals from 8 different West African nations. Included were Liberia, Sierra Leone, Togo, Burkino Faso, Benin, Ivory Coast and Nigeria - 25 people in all. For one week in hot humid conditions, I trained the English speakers (Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone) and had the French speakers as English learners. We had lots of fun playing games, singing songs, and drilling various conversations, letter sounds and Bible stories. Many came up to me afterward to tell me how effective my new curriculum book was in actually helping an English learner use English rather than just learn it.
I also discovered several corrections needed and hopefully, the revised version will be ready for the English Language Ministry Training Institute in Accra, Ghana in early September. Thanks for praying about the details that need to be completed!
